They Say Everyone has a Book in Them…

It seems like almost all of them have written one, too.

Before publishing my first book, I took a course to learn how to market it. I produced a marketing plan, which I am following. My book now has eye-catching cover art, attention-grabbing blurb and an interesting title: The Lost Castle. I have a website, from which I write this blog, to let people know I am the author of a travel mystery book. I promote this blog through social media. So why isn’t my book flying off the virtual shelf?

Finding my work

I think this might have something to do with the hundreds of thousands of alternatives that are available. Most potential customers are not even seeing my striking art or reading my carefully crafted copy. They are finding something else to buy before they get that far. I know reviews are important to potential buyers, so I’ve asked people I know have bought the book to post a review. A few have posted so far and they have mostly given my book 5 stars, which is encouraging. But even when using filters to see just books that have been rated 5 stars, there are still many books in front of mine.

There are also a lot of blogs. I looked up the best days to post to different social media sites to reach the most readers, and adjusted my schedule accordingly. The result? My blog received fewer views than before. It turns out that the most popular days for reading posts are also the most popular days for adding posts. My blog was lost beneath a stream of newer content.

Some authors have clearly cracked this, so I joined an online author forum to find out how they have succeeded in getting their books noticed. The consensus seems to be that I need to hurry up and publish another book. Having two books out there doubles the chances of someone finding my work. And if they like one of my books, there’s a good chance they will buy the other one.

I guess I need to get off my blog and get back to my book.
